  1. My wife and I are looking to do a family sabbatical next fall for a year. We have young kids (both under 3) - would love to hear from people with helpful sources/links. Thanks in advance.

  2. do you know what kind of sabbatical you'd like to do? (i.e. volunteering, traveling, language immersion, etc.)

Also you might want to check out the Family Sabbatical Handbook - it's the 6th one down on our book page: http://yoursabbatical.com/shop/books/.

I think you and your wife are INSPIRING that you're doing this with young children! Way to go.

  3. Look for a post soon with Dan Clements, author of Escape-101, about experiencing sabbaticals with kids. You've brought up such a great topic. We want to be sure to address it.

In the meantime, here is a good website for family sabbaticals:

  5. If you are interested in a sabbatical year or semester abroad with your family, an authentic world classroom comes to life at the Cloud Forest School in Monteverde, Costa Rica. For families and who possess real interest in exploring and Living a new culture, the Cloud Forest School provides both an academic framework and a community in which to base an unforgettable lifetime adventure.

Monteverde is renowned for its unique biodiversity, surrounded by tens of thousands of acres of conserved tropical cloud forest. Our town of 5,000 people is comprised of local Costa Ricans and North/South American and European nationals who have made Costa Rica their home. Art, music, yoga, dance, hiking, birdwatching, organic farming, fair trade coffee and the nation’s best ice cream all converge within a magnificent natural ecosystem, making Monteverde a dynamic and safe place to live.

The CFS, locally known as the Centro de Educacion Creativa, is a bilingual Pre-K through 11th grade independent school that offers education to 200 students annually. While 90% of our students are local Costa Ricans, the Cloud Forest School has long welcomed visiting families and high school exchange students to our mountaintop campus.
